Platform Workers Appreciation Day @ Sengkang North Constituency
On Friday, 28 August 2026, Sengkang North Constituency came together to celebrate the invaluable contributions of platform workers at the Platform Workers Appreciation Carnival, held at the Sengkang Community Club Multi-Purpose Hall. The event, which ran from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, was a meaningful occasion dedicated to recognising the hard work and dedication of platform delivery persons, taxi drivers, and private-hire vehicle drivers who keep Singapore's everyday services running smoothly. Emcee Shirleen set the tone for the afternoon with warmth and professionalism, welcoming the platform workers who had taken time out of their busy schedules to attend the celebration. The Emcee’s engaging presence ensured that the atmosphere remained lively and appreciative throughout the carnival, as workers registered and visited the various engagement booths set up by partners.
The Sengkang North Constituency, under the guidance of Grassroots Advisor Ms. Theodora Lai, has been actively championing community support initiatives that uplift residents and workers alike. Ms. Lai, who also serves as the Branch Chair of Sengkang North and holds the position of Partner and Co-Founder at a deep tech venture builder, has a longstanding commitment to community service since 2009. The Constituency is known for its grassroots efforts, including the Sunrise Specials programme offering $2 breakfast sets, the Sengkang Cares School Uniform Fund for lower-to-middle-income families, and a partnership with the Dyslexia Association of Singapore to support children with learning needs. It was therefore fitting that the Emcee highlighted how the Constituency extends this same spirit of care to platform workers, ensuring they feel seen, valued, and supported.
The event was held in partnership with NTUC and affiliated Platform Work Associations, including the National Taxi Association (NTA), the National Private Hire Vehicles Association (NPHVA), and the National Delivery Champions Association (NDCA). Emcee Shirleen guided attendees through the various engagement booths, where partners such as foodpanda, Gojek, Lalamove, and CDG Zig were present to engage with existing members and conduct recruitment. The Emcee also directed workers to the NTUC booth, where they could learn about membership benefits and complete a quick survey to receive a token of appreciation. Additionally, Emcee Shirleen encouraged everyone to visit the exhibition banners, which showcased key achievements including the NDCA securing a 30-minute parking grace period at CapitaLand malls for motorcyclists, and details about the Platform Workers Act 2025 covering CPF contributions, work injury protection, and stronger representation.
A highlight of the afternoon was the arrival of Grassroots Advisor Ms. Theodora Lai at 2:00 PM, who mingled with platform workers and partners at the various booths. The Emcee ensured a smooth flow as Ms. Lai interacted with attendees, taking time to hear their concerns and thank them for their contributions. Before her departure at 3:00 PM, Ms. Lai had a small group interaction outside the main event space, a moment that the Emcee tactfully managed to maintain the carnival's vibrant energy. The Emcee’s ability to balance the programme allowed workers to continue enjoying the booths, refreshments, and networking opportunities until the event concluded at 4:00 PM.
As the carnival drew to a close, Emcee Shirleen expressed deep gratitude to all participants, emphasising that events like this are NTUC's way of uplifting platform workers and recognising their essential role in the community. The Emcee also reminded workers about the importance of health and well-being, road safety, and the benefits of formal representation through the Platform Work Associations. With the support of Sengkang North Constituency and its dedicated Grassroots Advisor, the Platform Workers Appreciation Day was not just a celebration but a reaffirmation of the community's commitment to ensuring platform workers have access to resources, benefits, and a voice in shaping their futures.
