Emcee - On 20th June 2026, the Jalan Besar Town Council, led by its Chairman Dr Wan Rizal, who is also the Member of Parliament for Jalan Besar GRC (Kolam Ayer), organised a vibrant public consultation and exhibition for the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) at Blocks 46 and 48 Bendemeer Road. The event marked a significant step in the town council's ongoing efforts to rejuvenate mature estates, with the emcee, Ivan, guiding residents through a day filled with activities and important discussions about the future of their homes.
The Jalan Besar Town Council plays a crucial role in managing, maintaining, and improving the common property of HDB estates within its district. Beyond its core duties of estate maintenance and cleaning, the council is deeply committed to fostering a strong community spirit and enhancing the living environment for its residents. This is why the town council organised this event, turning it into a celebration of community engagement. The emcee highlighted that the NRP is a government initiative fully funded by the Government, meaning residents do not need to pay to enjoy the proposed improvements. The proposed upgrades for the area include the upgrading of the rear entrance ramp, a new and upgraded senior citizens' corner, a new wellness garden, and an upgraded drop-off porch. The lively atmosphere, with live food stations, arcade games, henna painting, and balloon sculptures, was a testament to the town council's aim to make community engagement both meaningful and enjoyable, with the emcee constantly inviting everyone to participate.
The event saw the arrival of the Guest-of-Honour, Dr Wan Rizal, who was received by a welcome party before delivering an opening address. After his speech, he and other invited guests toured the NRP exhibition and engaged with residents, showcasing the town council's dedication to listening to the community. The emcee ensured the programme flowed smoothly, announcing the various activities and the commencement of the buffet and ice cream after the official proceedings. This community-centric approach is a hallmark of the town council's work, as it actively seeks resident feedback to co-create a better living environment. As the emcee Ivan reiterated throughout the day, the success of the NRP depends on the residents, as the programme can only proceed if at least 75% of eligible flat owners support the proposal.
The highlight of the day was the public consultation itself, where residents were encouraged to submit their feedback forms to support the upgrading plans. The emcee repeatedly guided attendees on how to participate, directing them to the feedback form on page 7 of the NRP booklet and reminding them that they could submit their forms at the event or via polling boxes at the lift lobbies until 24th June. To encourage participation, every eligible household that submitted their form received a souvenir, with the emcee reminding everyone to bring their NRIC for verification. This emphasis on resident feedback is a core part of the town council's strategy, ensuring that the improvements truly reflect the needs and wishes of the community. The event was a clear demonstration of how the Jalan Besar Town Council is not just a service provider, but a partner in building a vibrant, caring, and sustainable community for all its residents.
