Emcee - The atmosphere at Block 6 Boon Keng Road and its adjacent open court was nothing short of vibrant on the morning of 16th May 2026, as Jalan Besar Town Council hosted the highly anticipated Neighbourhood Renewal Programme (NRP) Public Consultation and Exhibition. Guiding the community through the day’s important proceedings was emcee Ferlyn, who kept residents engaged and informed from start to finish. The event, held for the residents of Blocks 4 to 6 and 6A Boon Keng Road, was not just a carnival-like gathering but a crucial milestone in upgrading the mature estate under a government initiative fully funded by the state, meaning no out-of-pocket costs for eligible households.

Jalan Besar Town Council organised this event to present the proposed NRP improvements and to gather the necessary support from residents, as the programme requires at least 75 percent of eligible flat owners to vote "Yes" before works can commence. Emcee Ferlyn clearly explained to the crowd that the Town Council’s role is to manage the day-to-day operations of the public housing estates within Jalan Besar GRC, including upgrading common areas, maintaining cleanliness, and overseeing improvement projects like the NRP. By celebrating this event, the Town Council aimed to foster transparency and community bonding, giving residents a direct voice in how their neighbourhood evolves while ensuring that the proposed facilities—such as a new children’s garden with a physiotherapy corner for seniors at Blk 4, an upgraded community plaza at Blk 6, and a relocated community garden—truly reflect the needs of those living there.

Shortly after 11am, Mr Shawn Loh, MP for Jalan Besar GRC (Whampoa), arrived as the Guest-of-Honour, and emcee Ferlyn warmly welcomed him to the stage for a brief opening address. Following his speech, Mr Shawn Loh toured the exhibition booths together with invited guests, engaging residents and showing genuine interest in their feedback. Emcee Ferlyn then directed the crowd towards the live food stations and buffet offerings, which included local favourites such as Muah Chee, Kueh Tutu, cup corn, and ice cream, adding a festive touch to the important civic exercise.

Throughout the morning, emcee Ferlyn also encouraged attendees to explore the various fringe activities and carnival games, including a bouncy castle, a Mario Kart racing arcade machine, and real flower keychain making. However, the serious message behind the fun was never lost. Emcee Ferlyn repeatedly reminded residents that their votes matter, highlighting that feedback forms can be found on Page 7 of the NRP booklet and that each eligible Singapore citizen household is entitled to one souvenir upon submission after verification with an NRIC. Additionally, emcee Ferlyn pointed residents towards Block 5, where the Home Improvement Programme (HIP) polling site was set up by HDB, with voting open until 8pm that day and continuing on Sunday, 17th May 2026, from 10am to 8pm.

As the public consultation launch wound down around 1pm, emcee Ferlyn acknowledged that the exhibition remains open for viewing until the next day, and that polling boxes have been placed at the lift lobbies of Blocks 4, 5, and 6 from now until Wednesday, 20th May 2026, at 5pm. For those unable to submit their forms at the event, emcee Ferlyn assured everyone that the Town Council registration counter would remain open until 5pm that day, and that souvenirs would be sent directly to qualifying households after verification. In every aspect of the event, from the opening address to the final reminders, emcee Ferlyn successfully balanced the celebratory atmosphere with the urgent call for resident participation, ensuring that the future upgrades to Boon Keng Road are shaped by the very people who call it home.
